A Classic Southern Illinois Trail
Tunnel Hill State Trail follows an abandoned railroad corridor developed for hikers, runners and cyclists. The main trail stretches about 44.5 miles from Harrisburg to Karnak, with an additional spur continuing toward the Cache River State Natural Area.
Scenery Along the Way
The trail changes character as it crosses Southern Illinois—moving through farm country, forested bluffs, Shawnee National Forest lands and wetlands near the Cache River. Seasonal wildflowers, hardwood forests and wildlife make the route appealing well beyond its railroad history.
Tunnel & Trestles
The signature tunnel is now 543 feet long and sits just south of the community of Tunnel Hill. The route also includes 23 picturesque trestles. Breeden Trestle, about 2.5 miles south of Tunnel Hill, is the longest and highest, reaching about 90 feet high.
Vienna Trail Access
Vienna is directly connected to the trail and the trail site office is located in town. Day-use access areas provide parking, and selected locations provide water and privy toilets. The trail is surfaced primarily with crushed limestone and gravel. Motorized vehicles and horses are not permitted on the trail.
